A Weighty Issue

Monday night I hit up my old stompin' grounds (aka Sammy J's) to watch Game 7 in the Dallas vs Vancouver series. We kicked The Star's asses, beating them out to move onto Round 2. Go Canucks!

Anytime I go into Sammy's and see all my old coworkers and regulars I always get people saying things like "Oh, you are looking good," and "Oh, you've lost weight," or even "Wow, you have lost a TONNE of weight."

You would think I would be happy with those comments ... but the thing is that I HAVEN'T lost weight. They are total backhanded compliments... If I look so much better now does that mean you thought I looked like a fat mess before?

I have hovered around the same weight for over a year. I can fluctuate upto 5 lbs in a day... but I stay the same basic size. If anything, I used to be skinnier. I gained about 15 lbs 2 summers ago... but lost it all right away, and it was a long time ago, so they can't be comparing me to then. I just don't get it!

Maybe people are trying to be nice? Maybe it just seems like the right thing to say?

Yeah, go ahead and tell me I look good: tell me you like my new hair-do, or I'm wearing nice shoes, or I have great eyes ... but I don't want to hear about the amazingly huge amount of weight I have lost unless I start looking like Nicole Richie. Thanks!

What a night!

Saturday started out as a good day. I woke up early and watched a movie with my sister's boyfriend, then Jaelene came over and we went for a 7 KM run. After the run we went for some "sush" aka sushi and then I went back home to take a nap.

My nap got interrupted by my mom calling from Mexico to say hi. I really didn't want to talk to her, I just wanted to nap undisturbed, but I figured that incase she died or something I didn't want the last thing I said to her to be "leave me alone, I'm sleeping."

I continued to nap until I woke up at 7PM. I turned on the hockey game and we were down 2-0 to Dallas in the 3rd. Not looking too good.

I finally got up and took a shower and got ready for the night. Might I add that I gave myself total "Cosmo hair" ... curly and big like on the cover of Cosmopolitan.

The girls came over and we did a little pre-drinking before hitting up the bar. I had two coolers and half a beer. Then around 10:30 we took off to Vanilla Room.

My friend wanted to hook me up with a guy she knows who bartends there. We were on his guestlist so we got in right away, and didn't pay cover, and I went to the bar to get a drink and meet him. He was pretty cute: brown hair and blue eyes, my weakness.

The girls and I had a ton of fun drinking and dancing, (both on the dance floor and on the big square thingy.)

After I had drank a shooter and 2 (or was it 3) double vodka's I started to feel a bit sick though, so I went to the bathroom. I walked out of the bathroom and I needed to sit down, so I went to the nearest couch (where I guess I totally pushed some girl out of my way.) I sat there for a minute and felt sick again so I went back to the bathroom. At this point I was WAY beyond loaded. I went into a stall and just sat there for a bit, which I was going to do until I felt a bit better.

I had probably sat in there for about 10 minutes when two bouncers rushed into the bathroom and started yelling at me to open the door. I stood up and opened it and they grabbed onto me. Being pulled like that I was totally woozy, so they had to completely hold me up as they dragged me down the stairs and threw me outside. Yes, I got kicked out of the damn club! I guess the bathroom girl must have told them I had been in the stall for a long time, and maybe they thought I was doing drugs or something?

The thing that really bothers me though, is that I know both of the bouncers. I went to high school with one of them, who used to work at Mirage, and I always said hi to him and chatted for a bit. The other one used to be a regular at Sammy's and I had hung out with him before and he had called me and stuff. I couldn't believe that these two guys I know totally manhandled me. I know that I was too drunk and they were doing their job, but they could have at least treated me with respect. Like "Ok Danielle, you are too drunk so we need to take you out of here" and offered to call me a cab or find my friends for me, instead of throwing me out into the rain.

I sat outside in the cold with no coat for probably 20 minutes before I got a hold of my friends to come out to take me home. I got home, took off my shoes and coat and left them in the bathroom ( but somehow managed to plug my phone in to charge) and went to bed.

After the girls dropped me off they went home. One of them passed out in the back seat while the other two sat in the driveway talking for a few hours with the radio on, so when they went to leave the car was dead. The other girl grabbed her car to jumpstart them, but put on the cables wrong and managed to kill her car too, so they had to call one of the girl's boyfriends to jumpstart both cars. They got home around 5 in the morning.

The next day not only was I super hung over, but super embarassed. What a good 1st impression I must have made on the guy who bartends there, getting kicked out of his place of work! This was definitely not the highlight of my life.

Sun Run

Well, I did it... I ran a friggin 10KM run... and I actually LIKED it!

I drove downtown with Elise and her dad and met up with my friend Jaelene and another girl we work with. Elise and her dad took off to the early start area while us first-timers walked around for a bit, went pee twice, and got in line with our fellow purple-bibs.

After waiting in line for a looong while, and dancing to some jams, finally we were off!

The first KM was easy... all downhill. The rest of the race wasn't too bad either. I got a cramp on the Burrard St bridge, about KM5, and another around the 7KM mark, but I kept on running.

The race was so fun! I liked the people watching and cheering us on, and the bands playing, and the water stations.

It took us an hour and 15 minutes to complete the race... Not too shabby for a buncha lazies who barely trained. The funny thing is too that at the end Jaelene and I were sprinting, and I made her wait for me. We crossed the finish line hand-in-hand, but I somehow came in one second before her, so I came in number 25, 112 and she came in 25, 116. Out of almost 55 thousand people we still did pretty damn well!

I definitely want to do it next year. Jae and I might even do a race on May 6th. Way to go us!

a thinker ... help me people

I don't have a lot of time right now, as I have a shitload of shop drawings to copy... but I wanted to drop a quick note because it has come to my attention lately that I have been dissapointing my fans with my lack of postings this week. Sorry Sammy! My weekend update will come as soon as I scan my pretty purple Sun Run number.

Here is something I want everyone's opinion on though:

My blog is obviously mainly a "fluff" blog... not that deep, mainly for entertainment, more of the goings-on of my daily life so all you married (or basically married) people can live the dating scene again vicariously through me.

Sometimes though, I would like to go a little deeper. I want to put things about my feelings and thoughts on life, so everyone doesn't think I am a party-crazy Barbie doll.

The problem is meshing the fun-crazy stuff with the thought provoking stuff. How do I do this? Do I keep up my diary blog and add the thinker stuff in there? Or should I start a new blog that goes a little more into who Danielle really is inside?

Would you guys read both? Do you like my blog as it is? Would you like to see a little more thought-provoking material in the original one? Sam? Kelly? Work Ladies? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

This morning I dragged my ass out of bed and took a shower instead of hitting the snooze button, and left the house in time to hit the Starbucks drive-thru. Well, let me tell you, I was not impressed. My Dolce de Leche latte was delicious, but the service was less than desireable. First off I was not greeted with the usual overly cheery "good morning" chat I am used to there. Then, even though there were only two cars in front of me I sat in the line from 7:10 to 7:19, post-ordering. That means they were taking 4 minutes a car! Furthermore, as I pulled up to the window I saw they had the audacity to have a tip jar out! I wanted to tell her to put it away if she's going to be so slow!

It's really starting to piss me off that these fast food or drive-thru type places are having tip jars all of a sudden. Taco Del Mar even has a tip option on their debit machine!

Tipping is for when you go to a restaurant and someone spends an hour or more serving you. Servers spnd their time bringing you drinks, taking your order, bringing you food, clearing your plates, getting you dessert, fetching you ketcup, getting you extra napkins, chatting/joking with you, cleaning up after your messy kids, etc etc. I have been there, and it's not easy.

I have no problem generously tipping an excellent server, or just plain old tipping a shitty server, but I am not going to reward the person who I spend 5 minutes with at a fast food place with my hard earned money. Especially when I'm already spending 5 bucks on a coffee, or 8 bucks on a burrito.

Maybe these fast food workers should try stripping to pay their way through school instead, because they aren't getting a penny out of me!

Spring has Sprung!

As I left my friend's house late the other night after watching a movie, I took a little time to enjoy the outdoors as I walked back to my car.

A fine rain had just started to fall onto the sun-dried pavement and the air was full of that distinctive "first rain in a while" smell.

It was warm enough to walk back to my car without a jacket, but there was just the hint of a chill in the air, as though winter wasn't quite ready to give up its grip.

The cherry blossoms of her neighbor's tree looked gorgeous, almost glowing white in the moonlight.

It dawned on me:
Spring has Sprung!

Splinter? Is that you?

In response to what I guess was our growing rat problem on-site some rat poison was put out recently. Nooo... we couldn't just trap and squish them, we had to poison them.

Well, they it worked... They died...Directly under the construction trailer I work in.

The smell is sick. It just reeks of rancid, decaying rat flesh.

The smell is the worst right at reception too, so every visitor that walks in gets a whiff of the rat smell right away. Good first impression!

All I can say is they better get someone crawling under there to clear out those rats soon, before we need gas masks.

Snowboots 'n' Sunglasses

April Fool's Day came a little late this year when I woke up to snow on April 2nd. I had to wipe a bit off my car, but it was mainly just wet.

As I drove to work the snow got worse until it was a damn blizzard! The snowflakes were like the size of Loonies!

The snow kept up for about 3 more hours, then turned to rain as it warmed up a bit.

As the day went on the clouds burned off to a gorgeous day! It was still cold, but the sun was shining with all its might!

The next day wasn't quite as bad... I did have to scrape the ice off my car, but no snow, thank God!

What is with this weather?
